Policosanol, generally is made up of long chain alcohols of
C20-C34. It existed in bee wax, sugar cane wax, rice bran wax. and
wheat germ oil. The sorts and contents of n-alcohols which formed
policosanol are different going with the different raw materials.
In 30s last century, scientists found that octacosanol is effective
in the curing of procreation impedient diseases. In the end of 70s
last century, Triacontanol was discovered as a plant growth regulator;
also it is an anti-inflammation agent. Afterward, Hexacosanol was
found to have effect in blood-lipid lowering; and, it is effective
in the treatment of Parkinson’s diseases. It also can supplies nutrition
to brain cells. But, these research results were not regarded then.
Near years, Cuban scientists have studied the effect of blood-lipid
lowering of octacosanol and got a great development. So, many scientists
pay more attention to octacosanol again. The application practices
of all trends are outspread. Hereinto, all the practices based on
the authoritative and systemic research works completed by Dr.T.K.Cureton.
Since 1949, it took two decades, Dr. Cureton had made an investigation
to 894 Americans, it involved the long-term tracing of 42 items. He
has summed up 10 main functions of octacosanol:
1.Enhance physical force, resistance and energy.
2.Be effective in muscle building.
3.Enhance the acuity n. of response, shorten the feedback time.
4.Increase the climbing ability.
5.Enhance the metabolic rate of energy, eliminate muscle convulsion

The studies of Dr.Cureton also shown that octacosanol is safe enough
in using, the LD50 value of octacosanol is 18000mg/kg.B.D.W., higher
than salt. Scientific papers shown that policosanol of very small
dosage is already effective. Take 2-4mg of policosanol (octacosanol
content:12.5%)daily, continued taking for 6-14weeks, the effect will
be significant. Meanwhile, someone suggested that the health care
dosage will be1-5mg daily; but for treatment, the daily dosage will
be 20mg.
The Hygiene Ministry of Japan has accepted all the research results
and put it in the index of 《The development of functional foods》published
in 1988, so as to lead the actions of Japanese industries.
In the followed ten years,Japanese had developed a lot of foods,soft
drinks and alcoholic drinks which containing octacosanol.The annual
production value of octacosanol products reaches to a thousand million
of Japanese dollar.
Now,scientists do not settle for the study of single n-alcohol.They
begin to make up policosanol that contains many n-alcohols and wanna
know if the effect of policosanol will be better than the effect of
single n-alcohol.Theoretically speaking; going with the development
of molecular distillation, scientists shall be able to produce policosanols
that constituted by any ratio and sorts of n-alcohols they want.

Octacosanol(12-65%)
Triacontanol(5-60%)
